Diesel Mechanics
Several classmates and I went to the Salt Lake Community College Diesel Mechanic shop to assess their work site and give a presentation and the prevention of back injuries.

Working in Diesel mechanics is a physically demanding job. Even with the help of machinery and equipment there is a lot of heavy lifting and putting your body into awkward positions. Among this vocation there is a percentage in back injuries. In fact both professors had come to teach after they could no longer work manual labor due to their injuries. In the OT profession not only is it our job to get people back to independence but also to prevent injury in the first place. Going in and assessing the job site as well as communicating with the students is a step toward lowering the risk of injury. I really enjoyed going into the diesel mechanic shop as it gives me a new application for the job that they do.
Adaptive clothing
Adapting clothing was a project we did to gain experience in sewing how we can design clothing to help people with various deficit independently get dress. We also made the clothing so that we would have it available in our school clink for our clients to either use during treatment session or they can see the possibilities for adapting clothing themselves.

Sewing project
The sewing project was a little intimidating for me as this was the first time I had ever used a sewing machine. It took a long time at first to remember all the little things you had to do to make sewing by machine successful. I do feel like now that I almost have all the steps down that it will become a lot faster and less time consuming. While I made my universal cuff on my own I partnered up with Bernie Johansen for the clothing and sewing adaptation project. Sewing strips of Velcro on the shirt instead of single tinny circle prove to be a more sufficient way to make this particular clothing adaptation plus it should lead to better results for the clients. This was a great experience for me and I see how it can be used even in my own life. I am now inspired to try to find myself a cheap little sewing machine and maybe practice on my own.
