For my Professional Issues service learning I spoke at the Occupational Therapy Assistant open house at Salt Lake Community College on October 17, 2012. My Professor Barb Kloetzke put my partner in I Kayley Crane in charge of speaking to potential student at other faculty at the college about what the courses in the OTA program are like at the kind of schedule future students should plan for.
Those who were at the open house asked a lot of good questions about the program and what it entails. I hope we didn’t scare them off too much. I know that when I went to the OTA orientation I came out wondering if I was in over my head. I wanted to express how wonderful it is the many opportunities that become available but at the same time it is a lot of handwork.
I hope the school can do more open houses like this to bring interest into the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. I think there are many people out there who would be great OTA’s but do not even know there is a job out there like this for them.
